Description

This course takes place on 9–11 July 2027. Tickets will be released later.

On this course you will learn to skin and butcher a deer in a way that allows you to use as much of the animal as possible. This is a unique opportunity not to be missed.

Organs: Removing, identifying, sorting and cleaning edible organs as well as useful ones: brains for tanning, the bladder for water storage and intestines for sewing thread.
Skin: Skinning, preparing, fleshing and preserving the hide for tanning and hide glue.
Meat: Butchery and the best uses for different cuts. Deboning, roasts, jerky, soup and basic meat preservation.
Fat: Rendering, cleaning, storing and preserving fat.
Bones: Separating joints, using bones as food, and making hide-working tools, awls, needles, fishhooks, harpoon and arrow points, and jewellery.
Sinew: Removing, cleaning and preserving back and leg sinew, then processing the fibres for sewing, bowstrings, bow backing, hafting and more.
Hooves: Preparing hooves for decorative work and making hoof glue.

Date: 9–11 July 2027.
Location: Craft by Karlsson, Hällekis, Sweden.
Food: Bring your own breakfasts. We will eat a variety of venison dishes for lunch and dinner.
Accommodation: Arrange your own accommodation. There is space for tents in the meadow and tarps or hammocks in the nearby woods. Water, basic portable toilets and an outhouse are available. A sandy swimming beach on Lake Vänern is within walking distance. B&B and Airbnb accommodation is available around Kinnekulle; book well in advance, as summer dates fill quickly.

Booking is binding and you are responsible for your own insurance. The course is non-refundable except in exceptional circumstances, considered individually.

About the instructor
Theresa is an enthusiastic practitioner of traditional living skills and primitive technology. Her interest was shaped in part by growing up in the Rocky Mountains in the USA, where backpacking, hunting and fishing were part of the culture. She pursued that interest in experimental archaeology and holds a PhD from the University of Exeter in the UK. She has been tanning hides using traditional techniques for over 30 years. Learning to tan grew naturally out of her desire to use as much of an animal as possible, with the added reward of a beautiful finished material.
